Why is Cambridgeshire County Council Highways missing in action?
Residents driving around Wisbech—myself included—are understandably frustrated and questioning what exactly CCC Highways is doing, given the apparent lack of coordination or oversight. The town is being brought to a standstill by overlapping and poorly managed roadworks.
We’ve seen repeated delays to the Barton Road closure, which I have been actively chasing. Yet the latest update simply announces further delays of up to 12 weeks.
Current closures are:
Anglian Water has Barton Road closed,
National Highways is closing the A47 overnight (8pm–6am)
Cambridgeshire County Council has repeatedly closed the A1101 around the new housing development.
The result? Lorries and cars are being diverted onto small, unsuitable roads because one diversion collides with another. It's a mess—and entirely avoidable with proper planning.
Residents are increasingly asking whether the Liberal Democrat-led County Council is focused solely on Cambridge and the south of the county. If that’s not the case, why the silence? Where is the leadership and urgency to sort this out?
There appears to be no meaningful coordination between agencies, no clear communication, and no explanation of how these works can be sped up. In fact, things are moving backwards—with more delays and even less visibility from CCC Highways or the Council’s Lib Dem leadership.
Someone needs to take responsibility. This is not just inconvenient- it’s unacceptable.
