Today is the one year anniversary of the serious environmental harm in Whittlesey which polluted the waterway and killed around one thousand fish.
Despite describing it as a Category 1 incident - the most serious level of pollution - and employing over 13,000 staff with a budget of over £2.2 billion, the public have still been given no answers from the Environment Agency despite a year of work on this case.
Like at Saxon Pit where over 122,000 tonnes of waste was illegally dumped, we have seen no enforcement action launched. Like at Wisbech Port, where the decision on whether to allow the storage of large volumes of waste is delayed, there is a complete lack of transparency with the public on an issue of public interest.
I have raised this issue in Parliament. Repeatedly written to the Environment Agency. But the dither and delay continues.
I believe the public in Whittlesey and across Fenland have a right to know who caused this serious level of pollution, when they will face enforcement action, and what changes have been made to ensure it does not happen again.
