The Wisbech Car Scheme is looking for volunteer drivers to help local residents get to hospital appointments, GP surgeries, shops, hairdressers and other essential destinations. Without new volunteers, those currently running the scheme have said it will close.
These journeys are often a lifeline, helping people access healthcare, maintain their independence and stay connected to the community. Whilst we still need to address the health services being moved away from the North Cambs and Doddington community hospitals making transport challenges worse, this scheme is hugely valuable to many existing journeys.
The scheme is flexible so if you can only spare a few hours a week or just a couple of hours a month, organisers say every contribution will make a difference.
Volunteer drivers benefit from:
Public Liability Insurance provided by the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA)
DBS checks arranged and funded
Out-of-pocket expenses covered
Flexible volunteering around existing commitments
They're also looking for volunteers to help run the scheme, including a Treasurer and a Volunteer Coordinator to manage journey requests and allocate trips. These roles do not require you to be a driver.
