Securing just one of 12 places on the Department of Education’s flagship programme

Before becoming the MP, people often said that our area was never chosen for national pilots so I sought to change this. An example is securing one of just 12 places in the Department of Education’s flagship Opportunity Area Programme. This transformational scheme gives our area a priority of any initiative launched by Department of Education as well as £6 million of top up funding.

As a result of securing our place, local teachers now receive free courses to secure professional qualifications. Teach First, the national programme that attracts many of the brightest young talents to teaching, has started work placing graduates with local schools, and a majority of our schools are now involved in research projects enabling them to benefit from the latest teaching techniques.
