Raising the profile of the risk of modern slavery
Tackling the devastating impact of modern slavery on victims is an issue I have repeatedly highlighted in Parliament as a backbench MP. For example, calling debates to highlight local concerns and debates in 2015.
Locally I have brought together community leaders to shine a light on the risk posed by modern slavery in our own community for example, I hosted a major summit with the home office minister responsible for tackling modern slavery, Sarah Newton MP, who came to Wisbech to attend my summit together with representatives from the national crime agency, regional police unit, gang masters licensing authority, human trafficking foundation and businesses representatives like the NFU.
The summit was chaired by the Bishop of Ely and I am pleased that following the issues highlighted by the summit meeting he has taken this issue forward with a further summit hosted in 2018 in Cambridge.
