Steve Barclay has been an MP for North East Cambridgeshire since 2010. His key priorities have always been to:
- Ensure healthcare services remain local
- Championing local schools
- Secure investment and funding for the local area
- Keep transport improvements on track
Steve was appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on 13th November 2023 having previously been Secretary of State for Health and Social Care from 25th October 2022 until 13th November 2023. Steve also held this role from the 5th July 2022 until 6th September 2022.
On 11th February 2022 Steve was promoted to Downing Street Chief of Staff Prior to this he was appointed the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister for the Cabinet Office on 15th September 2021. On the 13th February 2021 he was appointed as Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Steve served as the final Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union and played a pivotal part in getting "Brexit done."
He was Minister of State for the Department of Health and Social Care from where he was responsible for NHS workforce, finance, efficiency from January to November 2018.
Steve was Economic Secretary to the Treasury from June 2017 to January 2018 within his remit were retail financial services, including banking competition and consumer finance.
He served as a Government Whip (Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury) from July 2016 to June 2017. Steve was elected Conservative MP for North East Cambridgeshire in May 2010 and served on the Public Accounts Committee which scrutinises government spending.
Life before politics
Steve was educated at King Edward VII School in Lytham St. Annes Lancashire before reading history at Peterhouse, Cambridge. He later studied law at the College of Law, Chester.
He qualified as a solicitor in 1998. He worked as an insurance company lawyer for AXA Insurance, as a regulator for the Financial Services Authority, and as Director of Regulatory Affairs and then Head of Anti-Money Laundering and Sanctions at Barclays Retail Bank.
