TORY leader David Cameron joined the campaign to revive plans for a new College of West Anglia campus in March. His intervention will give added impetus to the announcement by Councillor Alan Melton that Fenland District Council will pump in £1.5 million to help resurrect the scheme. Now the Conservative Party leader has come on board, after he was lobbied at his spring conference in Brighton by prospective parliamentary candidate Steve Barclay.

BASEMENT cells at a Fenland police station are to close because of fears that violent prisoners may pose a health and safety risk going up and down the stairs.

Cambridgeshire Police Authority chairman Keith Walters said of the cells at Wisbech police station: “Put simply, they are narrow and steep and not fit for purpose.

Last week, Stephen Barclay, the candidate chosen by the Conservatives to replace Mr Moss who is standing down at the next election, raised fears that closure of cells at Wisbech was part of a wider bid to switch officers to Norfolk. Mr Barclay claimed that up to 30 police jobs – including custody officers, CID and a serious crime squad – could move to the new police headquarters at Lynn.

THE father of the nine yearold girl who drowned near Bedlam Bridge in February had an emotional meeting with MP Malcolm Moss to boost a safety campaign for Fenland roads.

Andrew Walker joined his friend, Graham Chappell, who has launched ‘The Charlotte’s Way Fenland Road Safety Campaign’, named after Charlotte Walker who died when a car being driven by her mother ploughed into the river near March.

Mr Moss, who sat listening to Mr Walker accompanied by Stephen Barclay, the prospective Parliamentary candidate for Mr Moss’ NE Cambs constituency, promised to do everything he could to support the campaign.

When it comes on stream, in 2010, the new plant on the Middle Level Drain at St Germans, near King’s Lynn, will protect nearly 25,000 homes
