ABOUT NORTH-EAST CAMBRIDGESHIRE

The Fens is a uniquely beautiful landscape which is found in East Anglia stretching from Cambridge to Lincoln, and from King's Lynn to Peterborough. It covers around a million acres of important farmland and wildlife rich water on its 200 miles of rivers, both natural and man made.

Fens MapThe high quality of the local soil means that it is used for growing a wide range of crops including cereals such as wheat and barley, root crops including potatoes, carrots and sugar beet, as well as sprouts, cabbage, cauliflowers, and asparagus. There are a number of fantastic farm shops selling local produce including apples, pears and strawberries. The area is also home to a number of important food related businesses, such as McCains in Whittlesey. The flat landscape of the Fens is famous for its stunning sunsets and is a popular destination with bird-watches.

The Fens are kept dry thanks to the work of numerous Internal Drainage Boards, covering the North, South and Middle Levels. The offices of the Middle Level Commission are located in March, in the heart of the North East Cambridgeshire constituency. The area is kept free of flooding by the huge pumping station at Tydd Gote north of Wisbech, which can shift 200 tonnes of water a minute with water lifted as much as 22 feet (7 metres) uphill to keep the Fens dry.

The constituency of North East Cambridgeshire sits at the heart of the Fens. It includes the four picturesque Fenland market towns of Wisbech (capital of the Fens), March, Whittlesey and Chatteris together with a number of beautiful local villages within Fenland District Council. The constituency also includes Littleport, Sutton, and Little Downham which sit within East Cambridgeshire District Council, situated close to the city of Ely. The constituency was previously known as the Isle of Ely until the boundary changes in 1983, when Ely ceased to be a part of the constituency.
